Eudora Welty and Cleanth Brooks in Jackson - Getting Out of the Present Tense

Eleventh Segment: Cleanth Brooks asks if contemporary narrative writings tend to invent their own reality as a result of not understanding the past. Welty responds that one problem of modern short stories is an inability to get out of the present and into the past. Cleanth expands upon this observation to consider the differences between Lyric, Epic, and Drama styles of writing. Welty warns against traps for talent, arguing that one must always be open to experience. "If you can't get out of yourself how will you ever learn about life?"
